Coherence of lasers
Laser is a kind of monochromatic coherent light with excellent directivity.
Laser directivity, we generally use beam divergence angle to define it. Laser spatial coherence and directivity are closely related. When the beam divergence angle is less than a certain degree, the beam will have a certain spatial coherence. The temporal coherence is directly related to the monochromatism of the light source. The longer the time for a light source atom to emit is, the more fringes observed through the double-slit interference are, the longer the time coherence is. The time for the light source atom to emit is called the coherence time, and the length of wave train within the coherence time is called the coherence length. The longer the coherence length L is, the clearer the interference fringe is and the better the coherence is.
For laser, the photons belonging to the same transverse mode are spatially coherent, and the photons not belonging to the same transverse mode are irrelevant. Thus, the spatial coherence of single-mode laser is the best.
